The course aims to deepen the knowledge acquired by the student during the course 'Introduction to Demography' during the first year. If fewer than 20 students take the course, then the course will take the form of completing a project. The information which such projects are to use will be found on the websites of relevant national statistic services, of the UN, of Eurostat and in other sources and academic publications. The course includes a theoretical section, involving teaching sessions by the instructor.

The course examines material culture, the organization and use of space and architecture in Neolithic communities in Thessaly, Macedonia and Thrace. It examines the history or archaeological research in northern Greece in general and problems of dating the various phases of the Neolithic period.

The French Revolution and the Industrial Revolution were fundamental to the shaping of the societies of contemporary Europe. The course deals with the ideological fermentation and uprisings of the early decades of the 19th century that stemmed from these two revolutions, the development of the Industrial Revolution and extensive urbanization, from nationalism and the formation of nation-states, liberalism, the evolution of European political systems, trade unionism and commercial rivalry, extensive colonial expansion and militarism.

Upon the imposition of the Pax Romana, the Greek world was to enjoy an extraordinary cultural renaissance from the middle of the 1st century AD to the mid 3rd century. This phenomenon was promoted chiefly by the upper classes of the Greek poleis, under the aegis of the Romans, who were enthusiastic admirers of Greek culture, and is associated with many well-known names, such as that of Lucian, Dio Chrysostom and Pausanias. These draw their materials from the glories of the Classical past, to produce a new Greek culture.

The course deals with the primary sources for the period and the basic chronology of the Hellenistic period (323 - 31 BC). It then examines the main political and cultural trends, including the sciences, philosophy and art.
