2023-24
The first part of the course deals with the nature and methodology of ancient Greek history, with emphasis being placed upon the nature and range of coverage provided by the primary sources and thus on the appropriate approach and use of such sources by the ancient historian. The second part of the course offers a survey of ancient history from the Archaic period to Hellenistic times. Here stress will be laid upon how the subject matter of the survey is affected by the nature of the primary sources.
The course will reflect upon gender as an analytical category in social anthropology. Gender identities reveal gender asymmetries and as such can be used as a means to explore the position of men and women in any given social formation. The first lectures deal with women’s position in pre-modern and modern societies. Thus we will discuss women’s rights and the vote in western cultures, although we will also examine “exotic” and “remote” societies that present interesting examples of matrilineality and matrilocality.
The course takes an anthropological approach to tourism. Seen from this perspective, the concept of culture is the central element that links anthropology to tourism. Tourism is seen in the course as a field of intercultural encounter, social interaction and economic exchange.
The course introduces the student to prehistoric culture and lays emphasis on the Greek world. The historical survey covers all periods of prehistory, from the appearance of man to the Bronze Age. It includes matters such as the evolution of man and the material culture of the Paleolithic period both in the rest of Europe and in Greece, the culture of the Neolithic period in Greece and Bronze Age communities.
