Georgios Charizanis

Georgios Charizianis, who is currently Assistant Professor in Byzantine History in the Department of History and Ethnology, received a degree in history from the Ionian University of Greece.  He then did a Master’s in Byzantine History in the Department of History and Archaeology of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, where he subsequently wrote a Ph.D, on Monasticism in Thrace During the Byzantine Period, which he completed in 2000. 
He has been an Academic Associate of the Centre for Byzantine Studies in the Department of History of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and was an Academic Associate in the Department of Library Science and Information Systems of the Technological Education Institute of Thessaloniki (2002 – 2011).  In addition to teaching in the Greek secondary education system, he has taught as Adjunct Lecturer in the Department of History in the Ionian University, in the Department of History, Archaeology and Cultural Heritage Management of the University of the Peloponnese in Kalamata and in the Greek Military School for Combat Support Officers in Thessaloniki.  He became a regular member of the teaching and research staff of the Department of History and Ethnology in 2013.
He has published widely on Byzantine monasticism in Thrace and the rest of the Balkans, Byzantine education and the Byzantine economy. 
Among his research interests are: Monasticism and monastic life in Byzantium and more specifically on Thrace and Mount Athos, education, society, economy and Byzantine daily life.
