       Greece's Two Fins-des-Siècles
Greece is in a state of crisis and has been for the last seven to eight years. When and in what shape it will emerge from its current difficulties are open questions. This is not, however, the first turn of the century that has proved problematic for Greece. Indeed, there are remarkable similarities between what the country experienced during the 1890s and 1900s and the 1990s and 2000s. This lecture compares and contrasts the key developments during those two critically important periods, not to draw easy or simple parallels between them but to use them to explore some recurring patterns as we approach the two hundredth anniversary of the founding of the country.
